Women Building Futures and NorQuest College partner to deliver new Academic Readiness training to women

WBF She Works: Readiness Training Series will reach more women wanting to prepare for pre-apprenticeship training

Women Building Futures (WBF) is pleased to announce a new partnership with NorQuest College to deliver a new Academic Readiness program. While the primary focus of this new program will be Indigenous women, it is open to all women who are interested in academic upgrading with the goal of writing and passing their pre-apprenticeship exam. “This program is designed specifically to address the needs of Indigenous women who are struggling to meet the academic entrance requirements for many of WBF’s pre-trades training programs,” said Corey Wells, WBF Indigenous Engagement Advisor. Ultimately, the hope is these women will apply to a WBF program and begin a career in a trades apprenticeship. Regardless of the outcome, this new program will definitely have an impact on the number of women who become registered apprentices in the years to come.

“This new partnership between WBF and NorQuest is a milestone in the history of WBF. Our dream of helping more women to succeed in the trades is coming to fruition,” said JudyLynn Archer, Women Building Futures CEO and President. “Given that NorQuest’s student population is 63 per cent female, this new partnership just makes good sense.”

Four Academic Readiness programs will be offered by WBF at NorQuest’s downtown Alberta Indigenous Construction Career Centre (AICCC) location in 2016, with the first one beginning February 29, 2016. WBF is providing the curriculum, instruction and ongoing support to the students in this program and NorQuest is referring students and AICCC clients to the program, as well as providing facility space and bus passes. Women can register by contacting the Indigenous Engagement Advisor at WBF or through their NorQuest Advisor.

“NorQuest College is proud to partner with WBF in offering programming that will help put women of all backgrounds into meaningful and important careers,” said Jill Matthew, NorQuest’s acting President and CEO. “This is another example of how NorQuest seeks to empower women through education.”

The goal of the four-week program is to provide women support, empowerment and educational upgrading to assist them with their future career goals in the trades industry. They will also write the Trade Entrance Exam (Level B). The program includes Trades Math instruction including Imperial and Metric systems and conversions, ratio and proportion, fractions and number concepts; and Science such as matter, density, pressure, simple machines, heat and temperature, and electricity.
